Troubleshooting GPS Location Data

Learn how to diagnose and resolve issues with missing, delayed, or inaccurate GPS location data in ToolWatch.

Overview

GPS trackers rely on satellite visibility, cellular connectivity, and proper installation to provide accurate location data. When GPS data appears missing, outdated, or incorrect, the cause is often related to signal conditions or battery performance.

This article provides troubleshooting steps to resolve common GPS tracking issues in ToolWatch.

Common GPS Location Issues and How to Fix Them

1. No GPS location appears

Possible causes:

  • Tracker does not have a clear view of the sky

  • Tracker is installed in an enclosed area

  • Batteries are low or depleted

  • GPS was not enabled during setup

  • The MAP tab will not appear if the item has never had GPS coordinates saved

How to fix:

  • Move the asset outdoors or to an open area

  • Confirm GPS is enabled in ToolWatch for this tracker

  • Replace batteries if needed

  • Verify that the tracker is mounted with ventilation and sky-facing orientation

2. GPS location is outdated

Possible causes:

  • Weak or blocked GPS signal

  • Intermittent cellular connectivity

  • Tracker is indoors or under metal

  • Batteries are losing strength

How to fix:

  • Check signal strength in the tracker’s data

  • Move to an outdoor or open-sky environment

  • Inspect mounting location for obstruction or overheating

  • Replace batteries if updates remain infrequent

3. GPS location appears inaccurate

Possible causes:

  • Tracker recently moved and hasn’t updated yet

  • GPS drift due to obstructions

  • Tracker mounted improperly

How to fix:

  • Wait for the next scheduled GPS update

  • Ensure the tracker is not enclosed in metal or placed near heat sources

  • Reorient tracker so the antenna faces the sky

4. GPS updates are inconsistent

Possible causes:

  • Weak battery performance

  • Poor satellite visibility

  • Poor cellular connectivity

How to fix:

  • Confirm lithium batteries are installed

  • Move the tracker to a location with better visibility

  • Check the area’s cell service
