This article explains how to mount a battery-powered GPS gateway correctly for best tracking performance.
Before You Begin
Battery-powered gateways come preconfigured and ready for installation.
Before mounting, confirm:
You are installing in an area with cellular service (required for reporting).
The intended mounting surface is stable and weather-protected when possible.
The gateway will not be placed in direct sunlight for prolonged periods.
Gateway Features You Should Know
A battery-powered GPS gateway includes:
Internal battery compartment
Two ⅕ inch mounting holes for flexible installation
Weather-resistant casing suitable for outdoor use
Cellular connectivity (no Wi-Fi required)
There is no "on" button.
Where to Install This Gateway
For best performance:
Install outdoors only when necessary, and protect from extreme heat.
Avoid direct sunlight to prevent overheating.
Mount in an area free of heavy obstructions (steel, machinery, thick concrete).
Ensure the gateway is placed where cellular signal is reliable.
Mounting Methods
The device can be secured using any of the following:
Screws, bolts, or rivets through the two mounting holes
Zip ties or straps (if attaching to poles, fencing, or equipment)
Industrial-strength double-sided tape (short-term use only)
Brackets or plates for mobile equipment mounting

Step-by-Step Installation
1. Choose the Mounting Location
Select a spot with good cell service.
Avoid direct exposure to rain or intense sunlight if possible.
2. Position the Gateway
Rotate or orient the device so that mounting holes align with your surface.
Keep the gateway upright and unobstructed for best Bluetooth reception.
3. Secure the Gateway
Using the mounting holes:
Insert screws into each hole and tighten securely
ORUse zip ties/straps to fasten the gateway to a stable surface
Ensure the device is firmly attached and will not shift or vibrate loose.
4. Confirm Operation
After mounting:
Allow the gateway to begin transmitting scan or GPS data to ToolWatch
Because battery-powered gateways report less frequently than plug-in versions, expect updates every few hours, not every few minutes.
Maintenance Tips
Replace batteries according to usage cycles (refer to the Batteries for Gateways, GPS Devices, and BLE Tags for specifics).
Periodically check that the gateway hasn’t shifted, loosened, or been obstructed.
In dusty or outdoor environments, wipe the exterior clean to maintain integrity.
Troubleshooting
Gateway not reporting data
Move the device to an area with stronger cellular service.
Replace batteries if the device is not powering on.
Gateway overheats
Relocate to a shaded area or add a protective cover.
Inconsistent scan detection
Height and placement may be the issue—adjust mounting location.
Remove nearby objects that may block signals.
