Assigning a Wireless Tag to a Tool in ToolWatch

Learn how to link a registered wireless tag to a tool using the Wireless Tag Browser or Item Browser in ToolWatch.

Overview

Assigning a wireless tag links the tag to a specific tool in ToolWatch so scan data is associated with the correct item. This step is required before the tag can be tracked.

This article explains both supported methods:

  • Assigning from the Wireless Tag Browser

  • Assigning from the Item Browser (Item Detail)

Before You Begin

  • The tag must already be added to ToolWatch.

  • You must know the correct tool (item) number.

  • The physical tag must match the digital tag you assign.

Critical Warning

If you assign a tag to the wrong tool and then physically attach it, ToolWatch will track the wrong asset. Double-check the tool ID before affixing the tag.

Method 1: Assigning a Tag Using the Wireless Tag Browser

Follow these steps in chronological order.

  1. Expand Tracking

  2. Select Wireless Tags

  3. Select the tag you want to assign from the list.

  4. Open the Actions dropdown and select Edit

  5. Enter the item number for the tool in the Link To Item field.

  6. Select Enter.

  7. Select Save to complete the assignment.

    • The tag is now linked to the tool.

Method 2: Assigning a Tag Using the Item Browser

Use this method when you are already viewing the tool’s item detail.

  1. Expand Inventory.

  2. Select Item Browser.

  3. In the Categories panel, select the category for the asset (for example, Drill).

  4. Right-click the tool you want to assign the tag to and select View Detail & Edit Item.

    • You can also open the item detail window by clicking the Tool Number in the grid.

  5. Under the Identification tab, open the Electronic Scan dropdown and select from the list of unassigned tags.

    • You can search using MAC Address, Manufacturer, or Serial (if added) by typing into the dropdown box.

  6. Select Save Changes to finalize the tag assignment.

Best Practice: Single-Piece Flow

To prevent mixing tags between tools:

  • Add one tag → assign it → attach it → verify → then start the next tag

  • Keep only one unassigned tag at your workstation at a time

  • Physically attach the tag immediately after assigning it

Troubleshooting

I can’t find my tag in the dropdown

  • Refresh the page

  • Confirm the tag was added in Article 4

  • Search by MAC address, not printed serial number

Scan data appears under the wrong tool

  • Confirm the correct tag was physically attached to the tool

  • Reassign the tag using Method 1 or Method 2

  • Correct the physical tag placement if necessary

The tool already has a tag assigned

  • Remove the existing tag from the Electronic Scan field

  • Assign the new tag and save
