Use this article to give ToolWatch your Geotabs login details and to learn how ToolWatch reassigns a tracking device when you move it to a new vehicle.
Give ToolWatch Your Geotabs Login
You will need to supply the following for the Geotabs server:
Geotabs database name
User name
Password
ToolWatch can then use your valid credentials to log into the Geotabs server, retrieve vehicles, and meter readings from Geotabs. ToolWatch will update your ToolWatch meter readings and pull down new equipment from Geotabs.
Reassign a Device to a New Vehicle
Note: Automatic VIN-based reassignment only occurs when the "Use VIN" setting is enabled, which is off by default. When "Use VIN" is off, ToolWatch matches a device by its VIN only at the first sync, and does not detect or act on later VIN changes. The steps below apply when "Use VIN" is enabled.
When a device is moved from one vehicle to another, it needs to track the incoming data to the newly assigned vehicle.
In Geotabs, update the vehicle the device is assigned to.
In Geotabs, enter the new vehicle's VIN. ToolWatch uses the new VIN to track the telemetry data.
Wait for the next sync. After the VIN and device ID are assigned in Geotabs, the next sync automatically updates the vehicle in ToolWatch and reassigns the device.
When ToolWatch detects the new VIN number for the tracking device, it will first check to see if the VIN is already in the system. If the VIN is already in the system, it will assign the device to the existing vehicle. If the VIN is not in the system, it will create a new vehicle in ToolWatch with the new VIN and assign the device to the new vehicle. In both cases the item with the old VIN will be removed from the sync (unmapped) and all the tracking will be assigned to the new vehicle.
Important: Do not update VIN numbers in ToolWatch for devices tracked on Geotabs. This will result in a new item being created, and all the tracking data will be tracked against the new item.
